Amethyst is a violet variety of the (white) mineral quartz. The additional Iron content makes its characteristic purple coloration. The Ancient Greeks called it “amethystos”, meaning “not drunk”, as they thought this stone would protect them from drunkeness. More than any other crystal Amethyst will quieten the mind (not because of Alcohol) and especially in Tibet the amethyst is considered to be sacred to Buddha.
