Lapis Lazuli, famous for its intense deepblue colour. It consists of the minerals Calcite, Pyrite & Lazurite, of which the latter gives the stone its blue colour. If strongly present, Pyrite makes the stone have its golden spots. In the old times Lapis Lazuli was one of the highest prized tributes to Egypt, representing royalty and honor, as well as wisdom. At a certain point in time this stone has been exported to Europe, for purposes of dying after being processed into ultramarine powder. The most important artists in the Renaissance, like Michelangelo and Vermeer, used Lapis Lazuli pigment to paint onto the canvas.
